As an Eye care Professional I am very accustomed to hearing patients' complaints of dry, irritated, red eyes. Most people usually experience more problems during the winter season (when the heater is on), when riding on an airplane, spending time outside on a windy day or even working on a computer. This condition is called Dry Eye Syndrome. While the most common causes of dry eye are age (anyone over 40 is at higher risk), medications (certain medications, especially anti-allergy medications cause dry eye syndrome) and hormonal factors (women are more likely to suffer from dry eyes than men), environmental factors certainly exacerbate the condition. I have found that my patients using Systane as artificial tears reported relief in the symptoms within the first few weeks of therapy. Please, remember that you need to instill drops at least 4 times a day for them to be effective. I always recommend Systane as a first line of treatment to all my patients suffering from dry eyes
