What You Need to Know About Ordering Contacts on the Internet via Mail-Order

If you are considering ordering your contact lenses through the mail, by phone or online, there are a few steps you need to take to make sure your purchase goes as smoothly as possible:

  1. Recent Eye Exam.  The importance of regular eye exams cannot be overstated. Regular eye exams are crucial to maintaining healthy vision and can often detect major medical problems in the early stages of development, such as diabetes and high blood pressure.  Initial changes may not be as easily noticeable to you, and yet the problems are often most curable when addressed early on.  That is why we emphasize the importance of getting regular eye checks.

  2. Contact Lens Prescription.  Always use a current prescription when ordering contact lens. Many online optical sites have forms that you fill in based off of the prescription information. By having your current prescription ready, you can avoid any problems that may occur when filling out submission forms.  Particularly, make sure that your prescription is updated frequently (ideally, once per year), to ensure that your vision has not changed and that the type of contacts you are using is still the most appropriate for you.

  3. Check your order. Once the order for contact lens has been placed and received, thoroughly check the contents of your package to make sure that it coincides with your prescription exactly as intended. Pay close attention to diameter, power, curve, and brand name.   If the package you received does not look authentic or does not seem exactly what you ordered, DO NOT USE IT!  Generally, you can find good deals on the internet, but occasionally you may face an unscrupulous retailer, and we want you to be protected from putting a poor quality product in your eyes.
Ordering contact lens online is convenient and often less expensive than purchasing from your doctor’s office, but you need to make sure that the retailer selling you the product acts in your best interest.  One way to ensure that you are not dealing with an unscrupulous dealer is to buy from the doctor-affiliated site.  In any case, it is imperative that you have the correct prescription information available. Your visual health is too important to leave any detail to chance.
